As a fun side note, someone online figured out that a certain Whirlpool appliance rubber foot had a perfect diameter to replace the 1911SL fibrous washers, with a little easy fitting of course. I bought quite a few to hold onto for future use...I think I have the video saved somewhere if ever needed....pretty neat and creative solution.

You are correct, T. C. Johnson designed the Model 1907 and 1911...started with the 1903 and the group also includes the 1905 and 1910.

The original buffers were made of "Vulcanized" fibrous material and GPC sold out of them some time ago. However, substitutes are readily available on eBay, made by 3-D printer from some kind of polymer. Adam can tell you where.

Disassembling one to replace the buffer is a project best undertaken after watching several videos on YouTube. It is not technically complex but removing and replacing the long skinny return spring requires three hands and a prehensile tail.

All of the action components except the trigger/safety assembly are situated in the forearm. The buffer is not located in the receiver, behind the bolt, as you would expect. The bolt is connected to a massive "extension" in the forearm that travels backward with the bolt and retards it's velocity. It is this extension that bottoms out on the buffer installed forward of the receiver.

I believe this arrangement of parts was designed to avoid the many interlocking Browning patents.

Here is my rifle after finishing the stocks together. To recap, my rifle had no usable buffer washer left. The fore stock was almost in 3 pieces. Both stocks had extra varnish of some sort on them. I repaired the fore stock and replaced the buffer, shot it to check function then refinished the stocks. I believe the fore stock is heart wood and butt stock closer to sap wood. Zebulon’s School of Woodworking helped me through the process. The goal was to make it look like it should.

Hello everyone,

As the topic states, I have a Winchest 92 in 32 WCF that I just acquired. The wood needs some love, the the finger lever has a welded repair. I would like to replace that with a period appropriate clean finger lever. If anyone has one, or a lead for one, I would appreciate the feedback. Thanks in advance.
