PPU makes a round that works quite well in my shooting buddy's rifle. Very good brass so should reload well of your rifle doesn't like it.

Nice view into the past of our hobby! I'm thinking it's safe to say Dressel is the father of our S.H.O.T. Show. I don't know which would be more entertaining; taking a stroll thru the 1895 show in MSG or taking handful of period movers and shakers of the 1895 firearms industry to the next S.H.O.T. Show.

That is a wonderful article. I was aware of Winchester being at the exposition. I do wonder where his sources for the article came from particularly his source for all the photographs? The photo of the Winchester display is different than the one I'm used to seeing. Its from the same angle but normally the one I've seen in the past there are a couple of men standing behind the display. I've also never seen the other photos of the BGI tool and UMC ammo displays.

Your right, I been seeing both calibers in the list and confused them. Its 86's in 45-70 and the 45-75's are described as Winchester carbines and long rifles in the 28xxx range.

The 45-75 was exclusively an 1876 caliber versus an 1886. The CHG purchased Single Shot, Hotchkiss, and Model 1886 Muskets and rifles in 45-70 Govt.

I got screen shots of the 2nd link from the Reddit post of the guns which includes many 86's in 45-75. I can go through that list and compile a list of all the guns. I have all the 73"s from the 1st link of Google photos. I found an explanation for the Rebel Carbine with this note.

I just joined as a guest to participate in the forum. I own a few Winchesters and have sold a couple, a 1964 Model 70 in .243. and a Model 52 Pre A. I always looked at the pre-64 Model 70's in gun shops while in college in the 1970's but never go around to buying one.

I first bought a 4 digit Model 75 Target with an early Pre War Unertl 6X Target scope mounted in Winchester blocks. I then traded for a 1955 Model 70 standard in 30-06, it does have two receiver bridge holes but otherwise is unmolested. I have a couple of Winchester Super X2 shotguns. I recently added a 1941 Model 70 Target in 30 GOVT 06 with a Winchester Target Barrel in a bedded Marksman stock. The receiver bridge has two D&T holes and the stock has been cut with a Pachmayr White Line pad added. Best I can determine the Pachmayr pad nomenclature puts it in the early 1960's. The bolt is not serial numbered to the receiver and has a machined line through the number area where the number has been removed. The bolt does headspace properly. I have not taken the action out of the bedded stock to see the barrel date as I want to shoot it with receiver sights first.

I bought a concave receiver block from pre64win which is marked U on the bottom. I also bought a P1 marked block off eBay as the Unertl chart mentions that as a rear block for M70 Target rifles. The concave U block sits better on the receiver ring and came with two tapers head screws. The P1 block has a slight rocking to it. The Unertl chart and some forum threads on proper blocks seem to differ.

I do not know if I need a B70 front or a C70 front sight block if I put a flat type barrel block on.

I am certainly willing to collaborate with anyone (Michael, Bob, and anyone else) that is willing to help parse through all of those digital photos and create a database of Winchester serial numbers and associated calibers. I have a partial listing (that I created many years ago) that has two different batches of 45-70 caliber Single Shot (high-wall) Muskets that are known to have been in the CHG inventory. It would be great if we collectively can create a composite list of all the Winchesters listed in the Hawaiian CHG inventory records.

This is a partial list that I have in my research records;

My above post - talking about M1886's and smoothbores - brought memories back from 40+ years ago - of a rifle I'd love to have back. The rifle was both improbable and a mystery. What didn't help was that it was a later production M1886 and was beyond the letterable range. It an extralightweight, takedown, half magazine, pistol grip semi-deluxe, SGB with the Lyman no. 21 and surely that was special order and original as there was no rear sight seat. It was in .45-70 and was a smoothbore. It was in very very high condition. The downside of course was no letter to verify it and it was not marked smoothbore in any way. A .451 jacketed .45 acp bullet would not fit into the muzzle - so it definitely had not been bored out to a smoothbore. The only possibility would be a liner had been installed.

But who would have ordered a .45-70 smoothbore with the Long Lyman receiver sight and no provision for a rear sight? I can't recall the front sight very well but I believe it was standard. And even if the rifle hadn't been ordered this way, who would have taken a high condition M1886 and have it relined to a smoothbore? It was quite the oddity but the lack of a museum letter impacted the value dramatically. I traded it off, but like many, I wish I had it back. And of course, they mystery was never solved.
