I have to wonder what the rectangular silver colored piece was for?

Thanks, I was thinking they might have used "U.T." for Utah Territory instead of "Utah" for the early guns. Haven't been able to discover when they used the stamps we see. I was thinking a resale of the gun as a trade-in might explain what I thought was a later stamp.

There are at least four different Browning markings that I have verified on Browning Single Shot and Winchester Single Shot rifles.

This is Browning Single Shot #536. As you can see, it is nearly identical to the rifle Kirk acquired at Cody last month.

To the best of my knowledge, none have been verified with a serial number greater than 536. I suspect that the total number that were made was something very close to 550.
That display in 1997 was the same collector that set up his display at the Cody show just a few years later. I spent more than 4-hours at the WACA show display talking to the fellow. Unfortunately, I believe that he has since passed away.

I am planning on going. I am about 200 miles (about 3 hours) away, so I will have to leave early in the morning to get there. I had been planning on going to the Cody Show, but decided it was too far. I will have to stick with the shows closer to home. And like always, I will be checking out the 21s.

I couldn't find the Browning Bros stamps in my Maddis book but I'm not a very astute reader

What years were Browning brothers stamping any model of Winchester that were sold thru their shop?

Late 1885 through at least 1906.

This is one of the reasons I asked. It seems late in production to have a legit Browning Bros stamp.
https://www.rockislandauction.com/detail/4098/26/browning-bros-marked-winchester-model-1894-rifle

Pat,

The marking on that rifle is legit, but based on the position of the Browning marking, it was not one of the Patent payment guns shipped directly to Browning. Instead, it is a rifle that was brought to Ogden to be serviced by Browning after it was originally shipped out west. The serial number "348938" identifies it as an April 1907 production rifle.
