Don't know if you guys saw the '94 on Gun broker about a month ago or so, buy that rifle had a #38 on it. Missed out on that auction. I think it went for around $1200-$1400 on the sale? Can't remember the exact price. 

Ben do you remember that #21 you sold me a year or so ago? Still have it even found a box for it, not marked for that exact number, but close enough.  

Still thinking about buying this, I'm retired only a good investment.

I see your point though as anything pre-1890 was mostly in crates and curious to hear some of the other answers.

FWIW, here is a first year 1890 (solid frame) with the original (single) shipping crate.

I have seen wooden crates for quantities of 10 for 1892s and 1894s. I would assume cardboard became the go to in the 20s to 30s unless it was a heavy or special.

 Assume that rifles when in the warehouse were stored in upright racks until sent to shipping. From there they would be packaged and shipped to the necessary destination.

Was there a simple wooden crate made for each rifle? What would they have used to protect the finish (felt, canvas)? How did they protect from moisture.

There must be at least a few that have survived.

I see the seller may accept a "best offer".  If the sight is to your liking you might want to make an offer.  The Lyman 38 is harder to find than the 21 and neither is easy. I don't own one but I 've been following their prices for twenty years. 

The cheapest ones I've seen are those included in the sale of a beat up rifle. Usually those sights  take some restoration. 

Buffalo Arms still advertises a Peabody type (Lyman 21) reproduction sight for about $170 USD but it has been "out of stock" for a while. New England Custom Gun used to make a considerably more expensive reproduction but doesn't catalog it that I can see. 

I don't know whether the comparison is apt but I had been looking on and off for a Lyman 48F since about 2002. A local dealer had one back them but wanted $250 for it.  Too rich for my blood. I also wanted a Redfield 70E for a Model 94 carbine I owned and the dealer sold me a nice one for $35.  To give you an idea of the market. 

When I got really serious a year or so ago about a 48F,  I was pointed to a fine specimen on eBay but it took $485 of the $500 I'd authorized Snipe to bid for me. The guy just behind me had bid only a couple of bucks less and there were any number of other bidders tapped out at $475-$480. Still, I've had several Winchester collectors scoff and tell me I paid too much. None of them could tell me where the cheaper ones were, however. 

I hope you can prove me wrong.

That's a shame you weren't aware of the WACA get together afterwards, as I couldn't stay but wasn't aware of it either in all honesty.

I was able to complete a few deals, that I had been working on for a short while, and also lay the ground work for some others. There was a few members who had a couple pieces that I was thinking about, but didn't pull the trigger on. Laugh

I'm in agreement with Bert and the fellas this was not only a great find but I want to believe it's definitely tied into the VO, serial numbered examples. I really feel that box was a wonderful find, and with you're experience and knowledge, you surly proved that a keen eye can always find a treasure!
