Sorry you have no respect for me. I had never heard of lin-speed before so did some research which indicated it was probably not the best thing for the metal. Personally, if I am going to oil a gun I like to do the whole gun but each has their own way of taking care of their guns. My research did not indicate any issues for the wood but I would rather not have to be so careful not to get any on the metal. As they always say, each to his own. Have a great day!

I'll give resurrecting this thread a shot....I'm guessing there's been some miscommunication due to how the internet doesn't provide any non-verbals or context from which to draw meaning...my emails have been accused of that once or twice!

I hadn't heard of lin-speed before but I found their web site (https://www.lin-speed.com/). It has some good refinishing info and tips on there as well. I would also be interested in seeing and before/afters you had to see how it turned out! Thanks for the link, I always enjoy reading how all the different ways to woodwork stocks and how they always, no matter how different the method, seem to work out beautifully with a lot patience!

Mr. Bill Dywer,

You apparently woke this morning with a BIG burr under your hind-side... why are you personally attacking anyone who replies to this topic and has a different view than your own?. Burt (Humphrey) was simply stating what he has found useful, and he was nothing but polite to you.

What I would like to know is why do you think anyone (myself or Burt) is trying to "muzzle" free speech? Nothing could be further from the truth!

If you insist on attacking every person who replies to you post, I will indeed start censoring your bitter and petty-minded attacks.

Fellows: I have been fooling around with Winchesters for over half a Century. I have just about everykind of stock conditioner, even some good ones I made myself. Here is one I found on the market that will make your wood stock look like it was varnished. It will restore old wood and penetrates most wood, except of courses stocks that have been heavily varnished. It will however make them shine like new. It is called Lin Speed gunstock oil. It really works. Try it, you will be glad you did. Let me know how you like it after you’ve applied. A couple of finger dips will do your whole stock. It dries in about six hours, but longer is better If your stock is rough, use two or three coats. You will thank me. Guaranteed!

Personally I don't care for how it may effect the metal parts of your gun. Have you ever used it on an expensive, case hardened Winchester. For 60 years I have periodically and sparingly added a little OlD West Snake Oil to the entire gun - it has served me well - just my 2 cents and do whatever you want to your guns. No offense intended and hope none is taken.

Not wanting to let the cat out of the bag or steal anyone's thunder but I'm somewhat concerned about whether a certain WACA board member had enough cargo capacity to haul his awesome and extensive display AND a pile of TGCA trophies home to Arkansas. I understand he and another WACA member are cooking up a special display for the NRA show. I hope they bring it to Cody!

Displays are what set the TGCA and WACA shows head and shoulders above most gun shows.

Stock checkering was changed to what you pictured in 1966 and changed again in 1972. So the checkering dates to 1966-1972.
Bolt knobs were knurled beginning in 1972, except for the Deluxe which was knurled earlier. Yours is not a Deluxe stock. So the combination of that checkering pattern and plain bolt knob would be correct for 1966-1971.
Hope this helps,
