I started to cross check the serials of the Winchester 44's to my survey to see if I get a hit on one I have info on. I had serial 28311 and its a rifle with a extra heavy 30" barrel. That does not sound like a gun you would issue unless you didn't have any ammo and used it to beat the enemy.  I have seen in the list low serial numbers that would fall into the first model 73's that say they are 38 and 32 calibers. I believe all the low serial number Winchesters in 44 are 92's

I did some checking, and all of the low serial numbered 44's on the page you posted are indeed Model 1892 44 Caliber Carbines, and they are all on the same order numner #7619.

Do you have copies of any additional pages with serial numbers and calibers?

If the museum letter doesn't state the 24 inch length, it's very unlikely that it wasn't shipped with the standard barrel length of 28 inches.

This is outstanding, as he talks about the World renowned fair in Chicago of 1893, with the Winchester display and extravagant booths that we're set up. Besides the earlier booths and the comparisons of the different Black powder firearms of the times. 
What a great historical article that ties the Winchester brand of the early days to the other brands.

Jim was quite the Newton collector.  He spent many years passionately researching and pursuing Newton rifles as well as Newton catalogs, ammunition and loading tools.  He had a deluxe presentation Newton rifle with very fancy wood.  I nearly bought it but the bore was poor.  I regret not buying it as it was beautiful.  I shouldn't have let the bore condition stop me.  I've have more than enough rifles with nice bores to shoot.  It wouldn't have mattered in the scheme of things.

The letter seems to indicate this left the factory as a standard 28" barrel. The one I have has a 24" barrel (measured with a wooden dowel inside the barrel). If this was cut down back in this time period they did an excellent job as there is no signs of it. Are there other measurements or other indicating factors. I have a ton of pictures. Thanks!

Yes, as Jim outlines, Winchester was there.

I've really enjoyed Jim's articles over the last many decades.  He's written for the WACA magazine.  He's published a very large number of articles in Gun Digest (sometimes two in one edition) and he is a two-time John Amber winner.

There's a lot of other history involving the Hawaiian Marine Guard and such, and a model 1876 Musket, that collectors in Houston had, along with some other firearms mentioned, but no 1873's that I remember.

I have three 73's that are noted to the CGH in my research. Serial 372665, 395918 and 431661 that are 44 caliber carbines and the last one has a set trigger. I remember seeing the ledgers on the CGH guns a while back. I checked 431661 and its on the page I've attached. The issue with me using the list is I would have to letter all the guns marked as 44 caliber because I don't want to use them in my survey if I assume they all are carbines. The only other Winchester they could be are 92's but in that serial range they were made in 1907 or later after the ledger was written. Then there are some early serial numbers that would be first model 73's or could be 92's and could of been used .

I haven't. But that doesn't mean anything.
