It's definitely a top notch display, I was in awe looking at it in Cody.

In case anyone's wondering Jim DeRossitt's evolution of Winchester display from the Volcanic to the Henry won his category, best overall and people's choice. We didn't have an award for best candy offering but he probably would have one that, too. Outstanding examples, even an iron framed Henry! Lots of good text and related materials.

Jim even found the time to do some recruiting for WACA with materials at his display. His neighbor at the Cody Show and in Denton had a Rocket Ball display that I found particularly interesting but I seem to have misplaced his name. Just two out of about fifteen outstanding displays.

Maybe another time. I think Cody is a bit too far for me but it's always an adventure and a good time. Where are you, James?

If you go to Homestead Parts website you can buy oil that was used by John Kay. He was a retired Winchester employee and a Winchester restorer and his oil was supposed to be as close to the original Winchester oil as you can get. If I were going to refinish a gun, that is probably what I would use. But thanks for the info.

I’m glad this topic came up. Several years ago I was given a box of “gun stuff” from the wife of a man who had died back in the 1980s. In the box were a few things that I had never seen before… Linspeed being one of them. I wondered if any of the stuff was still being made. Maybe some may recognize this stuff.

I also have a drawer full of things like that i inherited. I use it as necessary. It’s all probably from the 80-90s too

Sounds like it would dry in a day and a gunsmith could rub out the finish the next day instead of waiting a week like with lacquer or BOL.

I’m old enough to remember buying and using those small glass jars of Linspeed (by Geo Brothers?)

Never fully “remedied” the way to STOP the metal jar cap from “glueing” itself to the glass!

After pouring a TINY amount into a Dixie cup for use, I’d carefully wipe the threaded portion of both glass and top . . . .and sometimes the two would STILL glue themselves together! (Once I even reverted to coating the threads with GREASE!)

Also . . .I’d be sure to INVERT the jar for storage after the first usage! . . . Air in a “partial” jar was a no-no!

Nowadays, it’s BLO (many coats) for me!

Good Day for a Winchester Model 12 Shotgun. This afternoon I was presented with a Model 12 - 12 gage shotgun, full bore, 3 inch, serial #1069882 production date shown was 1946. It has been well used but still in fair condition. It was a friends old family gun.

Included was a J.C. Higgins model 583.10 stamped SEARS.ROBUCK AND CO. 2 3/4 CHAMBER 12 gage, bolt action. unable to find a serial number. My first bolt action shotgun

Wanted to let the form know the serial number for record keeping. I will be researching the model 12-12 gage so if you have any leads on where to look it would be appreciated.

All the best Dale

I have used Lin-Speed for 50+ years. I get it from Brownells ( much more than $1.98) I hand rub 3 or 4 coats. This leave a shiny finish which I don't want. I lightly steel wool last coat 0000. Wipe down and wax with plain old JOHNSONS paste wax & leaves the exact finish I like. This is not for metal.

Further, I will not tolerate nasty remarks from mean old Bert.

As Mike says, Lin-Speed has been around at least as far back as the Nineteen Fifties. I recall Jack O'Connor referring to it in one of his columns on stock finishing. We know "boiled" linseed oil is linseed oil with metallic dryers added to cut down the time between coats of an oil finish. Lin-Speed was advertised as the gunsmith's friend for that reason.
