About the Winchester “Contract”

The modification to center fire was a Brazilian initiative in 1876, and had nothing to do with the Winchester company.

…nice gun - you don't find an original and correct 76 with condition very often these days as they are being tucked away by collectors. The Model 1876 has become very attractive to buyers over the last few years as they are finding how scarce nice one's are. There is night & day difference

…be completely honest with you.  The 1876 is a nice rifle, but the case colored ones will bring more.  The 1886 is nice, but not quite where it needs to be to justify an exceptional price.

…Henry,

Are your prices in U.S. dollars or Canadian?  If in U.S. dollars, the prices seem a little high for those calibers.  The 40-60 in the 1876 and the 40-82 in the 1886 aren't the most desirable calibers to collectors in those models.  Very nice guns regardless, but just a bit high on…

Right now the two pieces--the 1873 musket (complete with triangular bayonet) and 1876 rifle are mounted prominently to the wall over my fireplace mantle.  Probably not the best place to store them despite not using the fireplace more

…please let me know if this is the correct place to pose this question:  I have two Winchester rifles--an 1873 Military Musket, cal 44-40 and an 1876 rifle w/octagonal barrel, cal 45-60.  They are both in excellent mechanical condition and stocks are very good but unfortunately they were blued

…book by a great author. In my case I’m just not much interested in the 1876. I probably need it for my reference library but discretionary funds are tight for awhile.

…too believe that it is a Winchester Model 1886 (early production) butt plate.  The Model 1876 butt plates were nearly identical... but they all had trap doors in them.

…ago I bought a 1894 rifle in 25-35 just to shoot with the grand kids, I have to have a tang sight. I put a thin base mid-range vernier peep off a 1876 on it. Ten minutes to install, works great, blue matches the gun, and the 76 doesn't miss it. If I sell the gun the sight will go back on the 76.

…I recall, the 1876 model had more set triggers per capita than any other early Winchester repeater.  Based on TR's numbers, that's more than 16% of the Model 1876's

…The 1886 photo shows a sporting leaf sight and the screw is in the right place. The photos are poor but that series of sight is found on many 1873s, 1876s, and 1886s. They can be marked or sometimes not.

…many set triggers were built for the 1876 Winchester rifle.

In George Madis’s, The Winchester Handbook, he says there were 4562 built.

I know sometimes his figures are wrong.

Me and…

I load and shoot the .40-60 WCF in an original 1876 rifle.  It's sort of like a super .44-40.  About the same weight of bullet, more powder.  Heavy rifle but I understand it was popular with wolf

As soon as I saw that hardness tester was for sale, I was planning to test Winchester barrels.  I

I have seen similar entries in several different Winchester models, but they are very infrequent.  Your Model 1876 was originally built as shown in the crossed out information (A Fancy Sporting Rifle), but was then retuned by its owner, and reworked to its

…come by in its original specs, I only have a total of 40 brass casings for this vintage caliber that was chambered in the original Winchester Model 1876. I read that they quit producing 45-75 ammo in the 1930's. Anyway, here are two photos. The first one shows a 45-75 cartridge beside one of my…

…. It should be noted that they stated on their website that a .454 bullet would be required, but that is too small a diameter in my original 1876 to give good accuracy when the groove diameter is .457. The Bertram brass worked perfectly.

Also, to my…
