…to show up after one passes on. I desided to keep one "Presentation" 1894 Carbine, a 1885 "Pope Rifled" Low Wall, one 1873 engraved rifle and one 1876 Short Rifle, this just to remind myself what the last 30+ years of collecting Winchesters was all about. I'll still keep some of my Colt Percussion

…(Plating = #11, Color or cased Finish #23, etc.)  We know the "CF" on lower tangs occurs on both color case hardened and blued guns (1973, 1876, 1886) and on blued guns (1892, 1894, and would expect the same for color case hardened 1892's or 1894's).  So the "CF" we see on the lower tang…

…see in the photos it had some rusting and has been cleaned.  The lower tang and receiver finish whether CCH or blued should match.

As for the 1876 with the 1937 stamped on the lower tang, dont know there would be a correlation between the two.

As a matter of fact there is a famous photo of a young TR in buckskins holding what appears to be an 1876 and a dagger stuffed in his cartridge belt in the 1909 book I mentioned above. The other photo sounds familiar but I may be confusing it with this

…Hudsons invoice has an item "CF" #23 case hardening, receiver. The charge for this was $1.50. I assume W. O. stands for work order.

Also my 1876  that letters with a set trigger and removed before shipping is stamped 1937  and 102 on tang. I think the 102 is for removal of set trigger. My

What was the configuration and caliber of the 1876 with the R&R sheet?  I assume it is a "special sporting rifle" with pistol grip, deluxe checkered stock, case hardened.  Barrel length 28"?

Total 1876 rifles:  53,367

That seems more like what I see!

Assuredly a "Story Gun" that would need explaining as why it is in the condition its

…rifle caliber cartridges.

It would have been interesting to do the test on rifle cartridges with 36 inch barrels.  I'm referring to Models 1876, 1886, 1894 and 1895's made with 36 inch barrels. Come to think of it, Mark Douglas was shooting a 36 inch barreled M1895 in fairly recent times.
