Just scored a nice M75 and it’s missing a few things. It has the Vaver rear sight and the aperture is missing. I understand they came as a set. I saw a couple on an auction site but wanted to try here first. I have some Marble apertures but the thread is too small. Horizontal adjustment doesn’t seem to be working but I need to study it a bit more. Front sight is also missing. I have a Lyman 17M that looks a bit short (.404) but otherwise it looks right at home there if a Vaver front sight doesn’t turn up. Also what was supposed to be a magazine appears to be a single-shot adapter. I guess that really doesn’t matter but would like to have a 5-round and maybe even a 10-round magazine.

Need serial number of your rifle. No XXX’s either. If this is one of the very scarce, original Vaver M75’s, # G7527R, it should have a Vaver # W1175 front sight. In my collection I have an original G7527R. Low # 837, with a “38” bbl. date. Pic attached of what an original looks like. They are completely different than those for a M52. You may have a prize rifle. Mine is the only G7527R I have ever seen. Can you send pics? Thanks, Big Larry3675-Vaver.jpgImage Enlarger

I have a adjustable Vaver aperture. I’m not sure it’s correct though, I’ll check an old Gun Digest.

The biggest problem with Vavers is, they didn’t put a model number on them. There is a number on most, but I don’t think it is a model number. Maybe a parts #, but I have never seen a chart with numbers to match. They made Vavers for near all rifles, and the 22 series is smaller and completely different. Big Larry

Mine is # 837 and completely original. Your rifle should have a “47” bbl. date. If you think #837 is a low number, I also have #282 and have found none lower. We will get this rifle back to original.   Thanks, Big Larry

My bet is that it has a “42” marked barrel.

My # 45428, a lower number, has a “47” dated bbl. a Lyman 58E and a Winchester M77R on a very high KK marked front sight base. It appears to be original in all respects.   Big Larry

Larry,

I have a late pre-war Model 75 Target PR date 7/7/1942 and it has a “42” marked barrel.  I suspect that a late 1942 serialized Model 75 receiver could have either a 42 or a 47 barrel on it.

Yes, this was JWA’s assessment of the rifle. Either 42 or 47. JWA has some very interesting data on the M75’s. When he gets his book published, I understand it will be followed by one on the M75. Thanks Bert.   Big LarryDSCF0255.JPGImage Enlarger

I’m trying to get my act together and go hunting this weekend, just finished assembling the hunting loads for my other project. Can y’all wait until I get back from S TX to pull the barreled action out of the stock? 42 makes sense to me, the early part of the run at a later date would likely have been made with parts on hand but that’s just conjecture based on Madis’ description of Winchester production.

It’s 8:30, I haven’t had supper yet but I have poured myself a cocktail. Have some pics I may be able to post but the barrel date will have to wait. Sorry, but I don’t shoot, load or work on guns after a drink.

Good idea. I don’t drink so it is not a problem with me.

My 1947 rifle has a lower number than yours, but after the war they first cleaned up parts on hand. They made special runs of M75’s for the Marines and Army around 1942, so I’m guessing they either bbld. your rifle with a leftover contract bbl. or a 1947 bbl. after civilian production started again. I have heard of 1945 and 1946 bbls. but these may have been US contract rifles. These US contract rifles are hard to ID. They were blued and for the most part, devoid of any US markings. Most were reworked and are parkerized and have the rework facility cartouche stamped into the stock. Blued original specimens are quite hard to find. I’m sticking with my guess, “47”.   Big LarryOld-M75-US.jpgImage Enlarger

I also don’t load or work on guns when I’m in a hurry or distracted. These old guns deserve my undivided attention.

I saw an armory 75 but it was pretty rough and trigger didn’t work. Stock had been worked over but it had mil stamps and a stenciled number. Finish was parkerized.

Well, finally got my venison in the freezer last night so I put the 75 in a vise tonight for a closer look. Barrel is marked “46” and the rear sight mounting screws are 6-48 so apparently the Vaver sight is not a factory installation according to Mr. Sailor. Horizontal adjustment is stuck so I’m thinking I may surplus it and try to find some less-rare sights to make a shooter out of this rifle.

Any suggestions for front & rear sights?

I have a .404 Lyman 17M front, it would probably work with a lower profile rear sight.

There are many sights that will fit your M75. Lyman 57 E, Lyman 57 EW, Lyman 57 ES, Lyman 58E, Redfield M75HW, and the early Winchester M84-A Extendable. Front sights too, are all over the board. If I were you, I would leave the Vaver on and find a Vaver W1175 front sight to match. All these sights show up on Ebay from time to time. The Vaver is probably the best of the lot. I have a Vaver #35 MIELT on my heavy bbl. Flat top 1940 vintage M52-B.

All Vavers exhibit the finest of workmanship. My good friend Roger Sailor may be able to help with the sights., or maybe even JWA.  Big LarryDSCF0255.JPGImage Enlarger

Thanks, have been exchanging e-mails with Mr Sailor, he’s been a big help. Thanks for sending him my way. Still can’t get the horizontal adjustment to free up, Roger is wanting the number off the bottom so I might as well put it back in the vise and pull it off. A good Kroil soak should do the trick.

I would like the number on the underside as well if you could post it here.

I agree with Larry that the Vaver is one of the best of the factory sight options and you should keep it but if you still decide you would still rather have something else I would be willing to trade any the above mentioned sights for it if it is in good condition.

No number on the bottom of the sight. Horizontal adjustment still frozen last night. Bad day at Black Rock this evening so the sight will soak for another day.

I give up, can’t get the horizontal adjustment to work. Been soaking for a couple of days and still won’t move. I think I’ll just move on to a set of Lymans. This has been interesting and entertaining but I’m ready to get this old girl shooting.

Looks like I don’t have any trading material, JWA. What would you recommend for this old rifle? I just want something to aggravate the 10-22 shooters, won’t be shooting any matches or making lots of adjustments.
