Nope… Bill mislabeled it as a SRC when in fact it is not (nor should it be).  As a side note, this M94 Carbine is the highest serial numbered 25-35 WIN I have surveyed that is not a parts clean-up.  It was manufactured very near the end of the year 1952.

Good catch. Henry.

Bert, did they drop the saddle ring when they started to tap the receiver for sights ?

Or what occurred to the carbine to not have one ? Removed or never there ?

Bill:

Winchester stopped supplying saddle rings (sling rings) as a standard item sometime in 1928/1929.  They were available as a special order item after that up to around 1941 or so i believe.

To partially answer my own questions, Pirkle’s book ( page 50 ) says ” the saddle ring/stud was a special order feature after circa serial #950,000 ( late 1924 ).

…..Authentication cannot be verified after serial #353,999 by letter.

The screw on my receiver appears original.

Now, the obvious question: after 1924, how was an “eastern carbine” defined, or were they all eastern carbines ?

Pirkle’s book is not accurate in regards to the serial number range or the year when Winchester dropped the saddle ring.

Saddles rings were standard/optional through early 1932. Winchester began phasing them out mid year 1929 (based on the hundreds of them that I have surveyed), and from July 1929 through April 1932, the majority of the Carbines made were the “Eastern” variety. In April/May of 1932, Winchester made a number of significant changes to the Model 94 Carbine, and with those changes, the saddle ring was all but eliminated. Specifically, Nickel Steel barrels were replaced with Proof Steel barrels, the old style post w/pinned blade front sight was replaced with the ramp front sight, and No. 44A carbine ladder sights were replaced with a 22-series semi-buckhorn rear sight. It is extremely rare to find a factory installed saddle ring after April of 1932.

In my collection, I have # 1100457, a so called “Transitional Carbine”. It has the old style carbine stock, a 22-E rear sight  with a 3-C elevator, and a ramp with hood front. It has no sling ring, and is “drippy mint”. Nicest prewar Carbine I own. It also has an early mag. tube cut for the old style bbl. band. Parts is parts.   Big Larry
