Question?  How rare is a Winchester 64A rear sight?  It has the markings on the left side “Smokeless 32 WS”. I found one today on a 1905 M94 32WS Takedown #290196 problem the receiver was drilled and tapped. The rifle is otherwise around 70%. The pic below is from Rob’s site. But is identical. Does anyone know the value of one. Im doing a CFM search but will have to wait for Monday to get further info on the rifle. The price is reasonable due to the extra holes.12.JPGImage Enlarger

They are fairly common. There are 2 on ebay right now and they sell for about $100 depending on condition.

I have one on my 1903 vintage # 175601 Take Down in 32 WS, and all I have to say about them is, that they are UGLY !!! Wish the rifle would have come with the Sporting rear. This particular rifle sat in the warehouse. for over a year until it was shipped. I often wonder why??  Big Larry

Most folks do think they are ugly, but I happen to like it since its the only one I have in my ’94 collection. It adds a little flavor, as this picture shows. I’m all about being able to lay out a group of rifles and see obvious differences from across the room, like barrel lengths, magazine lengths, barrel shapes, stock styles, etc., etc., etc.

I agree with that, It is a unique sight. not too pretty for sure but I like the fact that it’s basically custom made at Winchester for the M94 32WS.  I’m pulling my hair out trying to justify purchasing a rifle that is in great shape with many unique features ie: takedown, half magazine, 64a sight. yet was drilled and tapped Cry

My theory is for an otherwise desirable gun , the substantial price reduction you get because of the holes …if nicely done it makes it enticing to me ,

For the life of me, I cannot see buying a Swiss Cheesed rifle. No matter what the price. I learned to collect by the following rule,” Never, never, buy a gun you have to make excuses for.” That was Mr. Blaine Hutchinson a collector of very high end Winchesters back in the early 70’s. He also said, ” buy what you can afford, and never buy junk guns”. I have a mediocre collection at best, and am not rich, but I am proud of what I have. Big Larry

That sight is BUTT UGLY to me. I have a ’94 semi- deluxe that was sent back to the factory and returned with a flat top rear sight. Why did Winchester make that sight, as it would catch on any thing?

That is funny, I was considering buying a 58 Edsel convertible at one time.I dont like the look of the 59 model, but I like late 50’s cars and possibly the  ‘fins’ on the sides of this sight. I still have my first car a 59 Cadillac Coupe. (Not from new Im not that old)

I never really thought of these sights as Ugly, (considered it to be part of the 32 special being special ), but now that it has been mentioned by a few………

I have one of these sights on a 32 Spcl  that has been ruined by someone filing down the sides more than an 1/8 inch and I always wondered why, I guess that the sight may have bothered some people way back too.

I am admitting Im uncouth again but cant help myself sometimes and dont mean to go against the grain of the True Collectors, but appreciate being able to voice an alternative view point

Cheers

Phil

Hey, different strokes for different folks. I also prefer the M26 California Buckhorn. That to some folks is also ugly. Not to me though. Big Larry

Rifle or carbine? I have another kind of scarce carbine, a Transitional 30 WCF with a M22-E rear sight dated 1927. Don’t see those too often either. Thanks, Big Larry

Just got the Cody search back and all is as it should be except one major thing its listed as a 30 caliber not 32WS. I asked for a double check on that. The rest of the rifle matches the search.   Is the serial number somewhere on both the barrel and receiver half’s of a 1894 takedown like the Model 1897?

Hope it is an oversight.

Since its a takedown its sure a possibility that the two halves did not start out together. How is the take down fit? Does the wood seem to match with regards to grain and finish? With extra holes in it, and the barrel not matching the letter I would probably steer clear of it unless the price is too good to pass up for a shooter ’94.

Does anyone know if there are differences in the receiver for the two cartridges? Will a 32ws feed thru a 30wcf receiver just fine?

I believe the 25-35, 30-30, 32 WS, 32-40 and 38-55 all feed just fine through the same receiver.

Here’s an example: http://www.gunauction.com/buy/11400096

Good Morning from the Twilight Zone,

The Winchester Model 1894, 94, 55, 64, Chambered in 32WS is my favorite Caliber,,,,,http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/images/smilies/drool2.gif,

In all Reality, the only Sight that should have been installed at the Factory should have been the Series 64A,,,,,http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/images/smilies/shock.gif

All other Sights should have been Special Order,,,,,,http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/images/smilies/doh.gif,

After all, the 32WS was a Smokless Powder Cartridge to replace the Black Powder 32-40.

Also that sight should have been standard on all the Winchester Model 1894, 94, 64, 32WS Carbines …..http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/images/smilies/Thumbup19[1].gif

Oh, by the way Larry, my next most popular sight would be the Series M26, Full California Buckhorn Sight.

Also, any Model Winchester Produced, I will buy a 32 Caliber, before any other Caliber.

Hello Hokey.

I have 4 32 WS guns in my collection. Only one, the very early 1903 rifle has the 64-A.

The others, all carbines, have, 1921, a 44-A, 1942, a 22H, a 1947 Flat Band, 22-H, ser.# 1416238X. X for duplicate serial number.

I have a spare, near mint M26 in my parts box, and they are a hard to find sight.

I would not pass up a real nice M1894 due to the caliber or the sight. That’s why I traded for my 1903 vintage take down. It is a good 98%+ round bbl. rifle. I do realize that the round bbls. do not have as much collector interest as the octagons, but I could not pass up, what is the most beautiful rifle in my collection. The wood is spectacular for a plain grade takedown. Maybe someday, I will sell them all to you.  Big LarrySmileSmileSmile
