All,
I do not want this string of posts to start depicting collecting quality Winchesters as a poor investment, or a “dying hobby”. I am a passionate collector and also sell many Winchesters. Collecting Winchesters is a rock solid and enjoyable investment when done carefully. The market can change small amounts but the fact of the matter is that Winchesters are a hot commodity as they have been for decades. I also encounter a fair number of younger people collecting Winchesters.
I am 24 years old.
I’m really surprised! Considering your abundance of Winchester knowledge and how you conduct your business I took you for much older.
Winchester Model 1873 44-40 circa 1886
Larry,
Do not buy a V12 Jag. I hated those when they were almost new. Also, do not buy a restoration project in the desert unless you want to sell your 1 of 1000 to pay for the restoration costs. From time to time, I have seen V8 converted Series 3s coups with modern ac, and sorted, on Ebay. As I recall, pricing around 30k.

Heres a couple of thoughts to ad. Several manufacturers still make current/ repo Winchesters. There must be a market for the style of guns. Of the Winchesters made from 66 to 64, there are more than 10 million. Thats a lot of guns. Even if only 50 percent are left, thats still 5 million. So, condition must be a thing or the price needs to be real. I think there are lots of guys asking way too much for guns just because someone sold one for a lot of money and they want the same. The same guns seem to show up at show after show.
Having said all that, some people are concerned that Winchesters will do as Model Ts did. Im not sure thats true. But I do think rarity and condition will start to matter more and more. Dont forget that on the last ammo run, 30 30 was sold out for nearly as long as 22.
I personally like 94s, and mostly SRCs. I prefer guns in 90 percent because they are nice and not faked usually. Just nice and real. However, it looks like a 94 needs to be exceptional or cheap.
Cheap needs to be defined your cheap may not be my cheap. Yes everyone has a 30-30 most people two, here it will probably be 10+ on average. If your local still sells guns there are two guaranteed guns to be in stock the henry golden boy, and a marlin 30-30, so the style is still popular, but until the rest of the world is educated they most likely will not pay 2k for a nice src when they can go buy a new marlin for 500$. but i don’t know they top end markets current state. but there aren’t a bunch at my local shows to pick from, and I am not big on GB. One old man that always has a few has his regular customers, One guy comes in at 9AM on Saturday and buys all his 92’s regardless of condition or caliber. I personally think the guy wants a bit too much for his stuff but there isnt a whole lot of availability. The hoarding is strong down here, But I don’t know whose doing it.
