I have an 1885 Winchester High wall rifle in .32-40, #3 30″ octagonal barrel, single set trigger, mid-range vernier and adjustable front sight. All of these are confirmed to be factory original. The walnut stock while appearing to be original and never refinished or modified has a slight taper on either side where it is fitted to the crescent steel buttplate. In other words the stock is thicker towards the middle and then tapers gradually toward the rear from the buttplate . I am wondering whether or not this is how the stocks were originally made or if this is perhaps a special order item or even a non original stock. It fits very tightly to where it attaches to the frame. I have never seen another rifle stock that is configured like this. If it is not factory then it was created by a very talented stock maker a long time ago.
