Have recently obtained wooden Winchester ammo case, measures about (household ruler, not calipers) 15″ long 9 1/2″ wide and 9″ high
Came from a garage in very small Montana town; original owner of the box moved to that town in 1945, was the Post Master, ran a general store.
Box has rather unusual markings (these below are just the ones that seem obvious. Some other numbers on the lower section of end pieces may be lot number but I can’t tell). Markings, printing, Winchester logo all very clear, very legible. (Box was stored inside, not out in the weather.)
This much I can understand as providing accurate description of ammo shipped in that box
Loaded shotshells, Staynless Ranger 12 Ga 500 rounds
but the length is specified as 2 5/8 rather than the 3 or 2 3/4.
Pardon my ignorance, but was there ever a 12 gauge shell in 2 5/8 length?
Or is this a misprint?
Does the box have any collector value? Box is in reasonably good shape, Top is missing. Nails that held top are present, just bent over
Sides and bottom are nailed, not dovetailed or wood screws.
Thanks in advance for any info you can provide

Hello Lewis,
Both the Model 1887 Lever-action, and the Model 1893 Slide-action were shotguns were chambered for a maximum length 2-5/8″ shell, so in answer to your first two questions, Yes there were, and No, it is not a misprint.
Based on your description of the box, it will not have much collector value.
