Rimfires have recently captured my attention. I am looking at this 52C that’s local. Seller is asking $950. I think he’ll move a bit on the price but I don’t know much about 52’s as I do other models so I’m curious if anyone has an opinion?

Seller lists the serial as 819xxC (sorry, his X’s, not mine). He says 1955, but looks like 1956. Looks ballpark according to the new 4th edition, but again, I’m still learning about these things.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

That is a very reasonable price for a 52C in that condition, especially since it comes with Redfield Olympic sights.  Can’t see the hand-stop or rail but I don’t see any non-original show-stoppers in the photos except the magazine does not look original to the rifle (no big deal) and for some reason the photos make the forend look abnormally blunt without the normal rounded edges but that may be an optical illusion.  What is the overall length of the stock?

I have got 81739C which is very close to that number if you want a photo comparison, it also has Redfield Olympics on it and came from the CMP which is where I suspect the seller’s rifle originated.  Check the bolt serial number matches the receiver before sealing the deal as some of the CMP rifles had mis-matched bolts and while they are functional they tend to devalue the rifle in the eye’s of collectors.

Thanks, JWA. I’ve asked the seller for OAL and a profile view if he can.

A view of the rail on the forearm will help.  Most of the CMP rifles were missing the handstop but that is not a huge issue either as they are obtainable (they are the same as the 52B and the 70 Target).  Have him verify the bolt serial number matches also.

Good luck with your purchase, they are great rifles and the trigger is decent also.  I have another 52C and a favorite Remington 40XB that alternate spots as my best “off the rack” .22 rim fire shooters.  Since the rifles are stable I am afraid to admit it is my eyes that are the difference in which one shoots better on a particular day but I love them both.

I got some more pics of the bottom of the forend. It does looked squared off, but Googling various 52s showed several variations, 52e (I think) looking most like this. Again, I’m no expert so I’m curious if there are any comments.

At least 1/2″ has been cut off the forearm tip. It should have a .6″ radius on the bottom side of forearm tip.
