Guys,

Picked up a 62A serial # 152893. This rifle has a steel butt plate and a checkered hammer. Both of these really look like they belong…….But they shouldn’t.

Your thoughts?

Erin,

I have a model 62A, new in the picture box, and never assembled. It is serial #152979,(our serial numbers are only 86 apart) and mine has the same serrated steel butt plate and checkered hammer like yours does.   I believe they made a few of these model 62’s with the serrated steel butt plate, and checkered hammer.

Thanks for the info Al !  When I was looking the rifle over I knew it should of had the hard rubber butt plate and serrated hammer but they matched so well with finish (hammer) and the fit of the butt plate is what you might expect, I had a hunch they were correct. Do you have any idea as to production #’s of this variation? Curiosity always gets the best of me………..

I do not… almost everything I know about the Model 62 & 62A comes from Ned Schwing’s superb reference book.

Thanks guys!

I have his book on 1890’s and 06″s but not the one on 61’s and 62’s. Looks like I will have to pony up to continue my education.Laugh

Best,

I looked in the Schwing book on the model 61 and 62, and there is no mention of the serrated steel butt plate for the 62A, So I did a Google search and found this response from Bert on a similar question posted to Gun Broker Boards in 2011 :

The serrated steel butt plate on your Model 62A and the one in the auction are original. That said, they were only used for a short period of time.

The serrated steel butt plate was first introduced in 1924, and was used on the Models 53, 54, and 55. When all three of those models were discontinued at the end of 1932, Winchester still had a lot of the butt plates still in inventory. Starting in late 1936, Winchester began using the leftover serrated butt plates on the Model 94, and also to a lesser degree on several other models. Winchester stopped using them in early 1946.

Thanks for taking the time for the added info Al,

It appears Productions numbers will remain elusive unless a survey is done.

I don’t know if a model 62 / 62A survey has been started, but these butt plates, and the checkered hammer would certainly be attributes to track.

During this time frame winchester also used leftover model 56 metal butt plates on the model 67. I read some where that all the material for regular butt plates had gone to the war effort. Jay

I found this older thread while researching the Model 62A that I acquired today.  Serial # 152469, made in 1942.  It too has the serrated steel butt plate and checkered hammer.  See photos.  Can anyone tell me the month of manufacture?

Thanks,

Mac

Mac,

June 1942 per the information in Ned Schwing’s book.

The three model 62a’s we’ve talked about here with the serrated steel butt plate are all in the same serial number range: 152979, 152893, 152469.

So, at this point we can surmise that at least 510 of them were built in the configuration of checkered hammer and steel butt plate.

FYI adding to the discussion on serrated steel butt plate on the 62A.  Serial # 151839 has the serrated steel butt plate, per photo for auction in early January.
