Hey Guys,

What is the best/safest way to remove a frozen mag tube ring from the magazine tube?  The tube is separated from the barrel.

Thanks!

Manuel,

Is there any finish left on it? if there isn’t then you can get a little carried away but if there is blue on it then you have to be a little conservative. I assume you removed the pin from the ring. I would first soak it for a day with a good penetrant and then use some heat from a propane torch just enough to make water sizzle. This is the maximum heat you want to use, any more and you could run the chance of melting the seam or discoloring it. You can try less heat at first and work up to the max. Just try to heat the ring only. After you try that a few times grabbing with gloves and twisting and it hasn’t come loose then your going to use a more mechanical method.  For that you would need to make a dowel from hardwood, steel or aluminum and turn it so it just fits inside the tube. If its too loose inside you will crush the tube. You will slide it in next to the ring and then clamp around that area with a padded vise i.e. aluminum, leather or lead. You then use the heat method like before but you will be grabbing the ring with a padded pliers or channel locks if your trying to save the ring otherwise grab it directly. Your just trying to get a little movement out of it at first and them more until you can get it free and slide it off. You have to use care when twisting on it since the tube has a split seam so too much twist and the seam will let loose and you might end up with junk.

Hi Bob,

There is no finish on the tube so i’m not too terribly worried. And yes i have removed the pin!

I will try soaking first.  I have some Hoppe’s #9 (older bottle with the good stuff in it) and i have some CLP.  Which one do you suggest i use?

Manuel,

I wouldn’t use either one. You need something that will penatrate and free rusted parts. I would use something like Kano Aerokroil or PB Blaster

AEROKROIL

PB Blaster

Folks,

A penetrant that I learned about in the old car fraternity, and use with regularity, is self made and beats almost all if not all commercial products.  It is a 50-50 mix of naptha and transmission fluid.  Cheap, able to make it in volume, works very well.  A situation such as this, where no WOOD is involved, you could make enough to immerse it in its entirety in say a plastic quart oil container and let it soak.  With the two components above, I would never let it get around any wood.  This mix was tested on rusted bolts by MIT (I think) or some other engineering school, and it significantly reduced the force needed to break the rust frozen connection compared to other commercial penetrants.  I would keep this mixture in mind for gun work as well.  The one question I do not yet have an answer to is the effect of long term exposure of nice blued parts to this mix, but likely very nicely blued parts were not in need of a penetrant, either.

I heard that too but it was acetone not naphtha. either way its the ATF that does the work, the other is just to thin the ATF so it penetrates. I don’t think it was MIT, it was a internet guy on YouTube tested it against other penetrants.

For tough screws and magazine tubes, etc, I use PB Blaster.  Can be found at any Auto Zone or O’Reilly Auto Parts stores.  Works within a few minutes.  Have not seen any adverse affect to metal finishes and have been using for several years.

I use Kroil… I am not at all inclined to try mixing ATF and acetone, and then trying to find a way to store it. The Kroil comes in a nice orange can.

I got mine from a gun show. From what I see you have to order the stuff.

Glad to hear that it worked–assuming it was the PB Blaster.  Ive used it on tough screws and the like and have been satisfied so far.  My wife doesnt like the smell much but oh well.
