So I’ve accumulated several Winchester project rifles. These range from early 1900’s Model 1903 .22 and M1892 .44 sporting rifle…to 1970’s M94 and M9422M rifles.

I doubt any of these cool old rifles really qualify as collectors…unless you collect shooters. I’ve got them all tinkered back to functional shooters…however all are finish-challenged(need reblued/refinished)…The M1903 needs a barrel-liner(bore is spent from corrosive ammo)…the .44-40 sporting rifle just needs a bit of attention here and there(plus it’s been ‘cleaned’)…The later M94 and M9422XTRM are mechanically perfect..just ugly. Zero finish on the M94..and badly neglected finish on the M9422.

Really the only major work to be done is the re-line of the M1903…doesn’t seem like anybody has a .22 Winchester Automatic chamber reamer.

Anyhow…I ain’t got a lot of money tied up with these old rifles. Really don’t want to spend a small fortune(or large fortune) restoring these guns. I’m hoping to find a competent gunsmith in Oklahoma or surrounding states to repair the barrel and reblue the M1903 rifle…and go from there.

Any ideas of a Oklahoma/Texas/Kansas/Arkansas gunsmith capable of properly re-lining a .22 Winchester Automatic rifle?

I have other questions too…but baby-steps…one issue at a time

Stevie,

I to have collected a few old Winchesters, ie, 1894, 1890, and 1903. Only the 1894 is a collector the other two are shooters. Problem, I just got the 1903 and after receiving the proper ammunition, I took it to the range to shoot and it would not feed the ammo. Any ideas what might be the problem, or what I am doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Aggie Bill

Won’t feed as in what?…Won’t go into the chamber?…Won’t cycle?

I ain’t an M1903 guru that’s for sure..although my old Winchester .22 auto will run new Aguila ammo…the ammunition itself is feeble barely adequate to run the gun. Seems every 50 round box of ammo has some weak ones which fire..however lack the beans to cycle and eject. Have to manually eject an empty and chamber a fresh round.

Doesn’t seem to be much of a knowledge base for these cool old Winchesters

The 22 auto ammunition would not feed from the tubular magazine into the receiver nor would it fit in the chamber.  Closer examination revealed it appears it has been sleeved for 22 LR.  I tried several 22 LR dummy rounds and the problem I had was with the extractor. I cleaned, polished and smoothed the extractor and I stretched the spring a little and the problem may be fixed. I will take it out tomorrow and give a try.

I think I will like this group and attempted to join the other day but for some reason it would not work.  I think I’ll give it another try now.

Thanks for your reply,

Aggie Bill
