I am looking at an 1873 rifle with a set trigger.  it is in good shape and got a search done by Cody prior to purchasing.  The letter says plain trigger.  Is it possible to modify an 1873 rifle with a set trigger?  Was thinking it might not fit or would require replacement of a lot of parts.

Any comments are welcome.

Thanks,

Mark,

To understand you, You have a 73 with a set trigger but the letter states plain trigger and you want to convert it to plain trigger? To convert a set to a plain would require all new parts inside, hammer, trigger, sear, springs  etc. and if this is a second model or later, drill holes and cut a slot.

exact opposite.  The gun has a set trigger but the quick search letter from the Cody museum says it was made with a plain trigger.  So the letter and the actual gun do not match.

Just wondering if it is either possible or practical to install a set after the fact as I have learned that the Cody letter is rarely incorrect.  Don’t want to mess with the gun if it has been modified.

Hope that is better explained than my previous attempt.  However I believe your response gave me the answer.  Guess someone really wanted a set trigger.

Thx

Mark,

Is this the first model you referred to in your other post?

this is a different gun.  Forget serial number at the moment but it is around 455xxx.

It is a rifle with a 28″ barrel and I liked the combo of the longer barrel and the set trigger, but it appears the gun has been significantly altered.  Just thought it was odd that someone would do that but perhaps not.  As mentioned by many others it is impossible to guess what people must have been thinking about when they made modifications to their guns.

Thanks

Mark,

I would have Cody do a double check since the serial number is on the tang. If it was modified after it left the factory it would have a extra hole on the bottom where the lever would push the trigger block. Does the gun letters with the 28″ barrel otherwise?

good idea. Will contact jessi and see if they can double check.  Will check the available pictures and see if the extra hole is visible.

cant see the lower tang well enough to say if the extra hole is there.

Had Jessi do a recheck and confirmed original info with no set trigger and no rework.

Was going to look at gun today but work got in the way.  Probably best as I won’t be tempted.

Thanks for your help.
